Co-operative Education and other work-related experiences
Students in the Statistics Department have the opportunity to enhance their education with a valuable mix of academic course work and workplace experience. We offer co-operative education programs for undergraduate students and for MSc students. There are no citizenship requirements for participation in these programs. We also facilitate work placements of MSc and PhD students via programs such as NSERC Engage and MITACS Accelerate.
Our undergraduate and MSc co-op programs are administered through the Science Co-op office, part of the UBC Co-operative Education Program. For further information, please contact the Faculty of Science Co-operative Education Program or visit the Statistics' Undergraduate Co-op page or visit the Statistics' MSc Co-op page.
Another possible work experience at the undergraduate level is through an Undergraduate Summer Research Assistantship with a Statistics Department faculty member. Each year, in early February, descriptions of projects and calls for applications are sent to Statistics students and also posted on the Department website as a news item.
At the graduate level, throughout the MSc and PhD program, students gain extensive work-related experience via involvement with projects directed by individual Statistics faculty. Students who have taken STAT 550 can also work as consultants through the graduate-student-run Short Term Statistical Consulting Service (STCS), helping non-statisticians with their data analysis. Graduate students have also held internships at companies like Google.
Undergraduate Co-op Program
The Statistics Co-operative Education Program provides students with a valuable mix of academic course work and workplace experience. This optional year-round program is available for undergraduate students in Statistics. The Program prepares interested and qualified students for careers in Statistics and related areas with 16 months of work placement supervised by practising professionals. Faculty advisers also visit students at their place of work and provide advice on technical reports required of all students in the Program. Co-op students have worked in a range of organizations, in such areas as finance, data science, medical research, and surveys.
To be eligible, students must be admitted to the second year of the Statistics BSc program and should apply through the Science Co-op Office during the second term of their second year. Selection of students is based on academic performance and general suitability to the work environment as determined by a résumé and an interview. The total enrollment will be subject to the availability of appropriate work placements and faculty advisers.
There is not a citizenship status requirement, and international students are eligible.
