
In Memory of Rick White: 1964 - 2016
It is with great sadness that we write that our colleague, Rick White, passed away some time during the night of September 1 – 2.
The BC Flag (at Main Mall and Agronomy Road) will be lowered on Thursday, September 15th, in memory of Rick. Members of the Department of Statistics will gather at the flag pole at 1:00pm to share our stories of Rick. Everyone is welcome to join in.

Professor Jiahua Chen receives ICSA's Distinguished Achievement Award
Professor Jiahua Chen has been honoured by the International Chinese Statistical Association, receiving the ICSA’s Distinguished Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions to the theory of statistics, particularly in the design of experiments, sampling theory, empirical likelihood, finite mixture models, and statistical genetics; for his service to the statistical profession through editorial work and leadership in statistical societies; and for his role as mentor and advisor to many students and colleagues.

2015 Nash Medal in Statistics Awarded to Ran Wang
The 2015 Stanley W. Nash Medal in Statistics is awarded to Ran Wang.
Ran completed a combined Honours degree in Statistics and Math, and graduated at the May convocation. She has worked with faculty members of the Statistics department on some very interesting research projects, and has accomplished a great deal during her years in the Department. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors!
The Stanley W. Nash Medal in Statistics is made possible through the Statistics Fund for Excellence.

Professor Harry Joe Receives SSC Gold Medal
Harry Joe has been awarded the Statistical Society of Canada's Gold Medal, the highest research honour the society bestows. Harry has received this medal
“….in recognition of his deep and impactful contributions to statistical science, most notably in multivariate dependence modelling, but also in composite likelihood, statistical computing, time-series analysis, and methodology for psychometric and genetic applications.”

Professor Matias Salibian-Barrera and MSc student Elena Shchurenkova Awarded NSERC Engage Grant
Renee Safrata, the CEO of Vivo Team Development and Professor Salibian-Barrera have been awarded an NSERC Engage Grant to fund a joint research project on statistical analysis of social sciences data.

Camila Casquilho Resende awarded Wendy Fan Memorial Scholarship
Camila Casquilho Resende, PhD student, has been awarded the Wendy Fan Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship has been endowed in memory of Wendy Fan. The award is offered to a student who began graduate study in Science, Applied Science, Medicine or Commerce and Business Administration and who has received his or her undergraduate degree at an institution outside of North America. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Constance van Eeden Invited Speaker Professor Miguel Hernan's lecture now available on Mathtube
The graduate students of the Statistics Department, with the support of the Constance van Eeden Fund, were honoured to host Dr Miguel Hernan for an invited talk on 28 February 2013. Thanks to the graduate students for their hard work, to Constance for her support, and to PIMS for filming the lecture and posting it on their website.
