
New Statistics course offering in Data Science
This fall, the department is very pleased to expand upon the popular exploratory data analysis course (STAT 545A) by offering a follow-up topics course titled "Basic Training for Data Science" (STAT 547M) Both courses are open to graduate students from any discipline.

PhD students Yang (Seagle) Liu wins best paper award in a competition organized by the ASA’s Section on Statistics and the Environment (ENVR).
Seagle's winning paper is entitled "Bayesian Melding of the Dead-Reckoned Path and GPS Measur ements for an Accurate and High-Resolution Path of Marine Mammals”.

Call for Nominations: Department of Statistics Award in Data Science
The Department of Statistics is soliciting nominations for the newly established Department of Statistics Award in Data Science, an award to recognize the importance of developing and applying tools to answer important questions through the analysis of data. This $1000 award is offered to an undergraduate or graduate student who has demonstrated initiative and creativity in making outstanding contributions in the field of Data Science.

2014 Marshall Prize winner - Vivian Meng
The Departmental Awards Committee is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2014 Marshall Prize is Vivian Meng. Vivian completed her MSc. thesis “Extensions to the Multiplier Method for Inferring Population size” under the supervision of Professor Paul Gustafson. Vivian is now a PhD student in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McGill University.

Yang (Seagle) Liu awarded Statistics Dept. Graduate Teaching Assistant Award
Yang (Seagle) Liu has been awarded the Statistics Department Graduate Teaching Assistant Award for 2014. Seagle is an outstanding TA who consistently scores highly on student TA evaluations. Time and time again, students have indicated Seagle’s willingness to go above and beyond in order to help them when they are struggling. Seagle has contributed to the educational mission of the Department through his direct role in courses, as well as by acting as a leader and mentor for newer TAs.
